About the project
Gartenzettel answers the question every garden year opens with: what needs doing, and when? Pick a German federal state and the app works out the start-indoors, sowing, planting and harvest windows for 80 vegetables, herbs and fruits, shifted onto one of three climate bands — the gap between the mild Rhine valley and the harsh uplands is roughly four weeks. Alongside the usual bed crops the catalogue carries soft fruit and small-growing tree fruit, from a columnar apple that takes a tub to a sour cherry that belongs in the ground. Every plant in the catalogue names the smallest pot or bed in which it still rewards the effort. The selection becomes a year calendar, a printable garden plan with a checklist for every plant and an .ics export for the phone, while a “This month” view shows what is due right now. A garden glossary explains the terminology for first-time growers, and each month has its own page listing what gets sown and planted. Nobody signs in here: your selection is known only to your browser, and you take it with you as a file or as a printout.
